The 2nd Annual Greg D. Perez International Sport Fishing Tournament is scheduled for August 20-21 at Gregorio D. Perez Marina in Hagåtña and Hågat Marina.
The tournament, hosted by the Greg D. Perez Sportfishing Foundation, will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to a press release from the foundation.
The foundation seeks to promote and advance the enjoyment of sport fishing in Guam and the Marianas through education and competitions like the next tournament.
In the statement, the foundation’s president, Greg Perez, spoke about his family’s history with the derby.
“Our father, Gregorio Duenas Perez, held the world record (for Pacific blue marlin) for 13 years, which still holds the Guam record. It was a proud moment for Guam and for our family. Through this derby and other educational programs, we want this legacy to inspire and promote our fishing traditions.
Categories for the derby include billfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahimahi and bonita, with up to $17,500 in cash prizes up for grabs.
A special cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded if Perez’s world marlin record weight is broken, according to the release.
In the statement, Perez also thanked sponsors, volunteers and the more than 100 boaters who participated last year. “We were blessed with beautiful weather and an incredible outpouring of community support, despite the conditions of the global COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to see you all this year.
