MIgardener Moves from Port Huron to St. Clair Fishing Tackle Building

The St. Clair building that sold fishing tackle for more than 40 years will now house seeds, gardening tools and vegetables.

Marysville couple Sindy and Luke Marion, owners of MIgardener, said Thursday they are buying the Anglers Outfitters building at 1426 Oakland St. in St. Clair and plan to move the gardening business there.

“It will be a bit of a change that people will have to adapt to,” said Luke Marion.

The future owners

MIgardener opened at 227 Huron Ave. in Port Huron in 2018 after finding success with MIgardener YouTube channel and website.

The couple own 1,200 square feet in Port Huron, which they say doesn’t offer much room to expand. But the more than 8,700 square foot building in St. Clair will give the couple the space they need for their business vision.

“As we grow, the building has to adapt to our growth,” said Luke Marion.

“We will miss Port Huron for sure,” said Sindy Marion, but it makes financial sense for the company to purchase a building rather than continuing to lease at its current location.

The couple buys the building for $270,000. The deal will close on October 27 or sooner, depending on how Anglers Outfitters clearance sales go.

The Marions estimate opening in January or December, but first plan to renovate the space with a new roof, electrical, paint, flooring and more.

“It’s not going to be a quick process by any means,” said Luke Marion.

The Marions plan to eventually use the 1,100-foot mineral well onsite, installing mineral baths in the future.

And the couple plan to keep their other businesses, BellaBolla pizzeria andbeauty salon batchmade BEAUTY, in downtown Port Huron.

The current owners of the building

Bill Barrons and his wife and co-owner, Theresa, Anglers Outfitters listed for sale in 2019 when Bill wanted to retire.

He thought he would work until he was 70, but once he hit 62 he knew he was ready.

The Barrons founded Anglers Outfitters in the summer of 2013, but the place has hosted active bait and tackle stores since the 1970s.

There’s a lot of inventory to clear and clearance sales started Friday at 30% off regular prices. The plan is to do a weekly progressive markdown until all stock is gone.

Barrons said he was excited about the Marions’ plans and thought it would be a perfect fit for the community.

“They are already a successful business,” he said.

Although he is ready to retire, Barrons said he will miss talking to customers and that the last day in the building will be “bittersweet”.

Pete Patsalis of Marine City, owner Hook One Bait and Accessories Shop, said he has been frequenting Anglers Outfitters for more than six years now and that the closure of the business leaves a hole in the local fishing scene.

“He will definitely be missed, but I’m happy for him,” he said.

The store’s hours will depend on clearance sales, but it’s currently open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
